President,
This meeting is convened pursuant to the mandate of GA Resolution 79/182. China dissociated from consensus on the resolution. We oppose the politicization and instrumentalization of human rights issues, and reject the practice of exerting public pressure on such matters.
China has listened attentively to the briefing by Special Envoy Julie Bishop. As a friendly neighbor, China supports Myanmar in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions, and in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national stability while steadily advancing its domestic political agenda. We support ASEAN in playing its role as the main channel and hope that the Five-Point Consensus proposed by ASEAN and Myanmar's Five-Point Roadmap will reinforce each other and be effectively implemented. The international community should focus its efforts on bridging differences and resolving issues, rather than intensifying tensions or further complicating the situation. China expects the Special Envoy to play a constructive role in facilitating a political solution to the Myanmar issue.
At present, the people of Myanmar have an urgent need for an end to the fighting and for humanitarian assistance. In response to the will and aspirations of various parties in Myanmar, China has been actively engaged in promoting peace talks and achieved positive results. We will continue to play a constructive role in helping Myanmar achieve stability and reconciliation. And we hope the international community will work in the same direction. Meanwhile, we call on the international community to continue supporting the constructive efforts of ASEAN and relevant UN humanitarian agencies in providing humanitarian assistance and post-disaster reconstruction.
Regarding the return of people who have escaped turmoil in Rakhine State, this issue must ultimately be resolved gradually through dialogue and consultation between Myanmar and Bangladesh. China has long been engaged in active diplomatic efforts in this regard and has provided multiple batches of humanitarian assistance to both sides. The international community should support Myanmar and Bangladesh in strengthening communication and determination on the basis of the existing foundation, so as to accumulate favorable conditions and create an enabling environment for the repatriation process.
Thank you, President.
