The thematic meeting celebrating the 10th anniversary of the China-UN Peace and Development was held on 10 September at the United Nations Headquarters. Mr. Fu Cong, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, chaired the meeting. Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, delivered remarks on behalf of Mr. Courtenay Rattray, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Fund and Chef de Cabinet of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Heads of the UN Secretariat Departments such as the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, the Department of Peace Operations, the Department of Operational Support, and the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS), the Executive Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Center together with the Permanent Representatives of the UN Member States and senior diplomats from nearly 30 countries participated the meeting as major beneficiaries of the Fund.
Ambassador Fu Cong reviewed the significant achievements achieved by the Fund since President Xi Jinping announced its establishment in 2015, and highlighted the important role played by the Fund in the capacity building of developing countries in peace and security and sustainable development through more than 200 cooperation projects benefiting more than 100 countries. Ambassador Fu Cong stressed that the Fund gives strong impetus to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and has become an important platform for China and the United Nations to deepen cooperation and practice multilateralism. China stands ready to take the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 10th anniversary of the Fund as a new starting point to work together with partners to charter the Fund’s future and implement the Global Development Initiative while upholding the international system with the UN at its core and building a more just and equitable global governance system so as to jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity.
Participants highly commended the Fund's achievements and expressed appreciation and gratitude for the Chinese Government's steadfast support in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and promoting international peace and security. They look forward to strengthening cooperation within the framework of the Fund and fostering solidarity among UN Member States to improve global governance and build a shared future for mankind. Participants also viewed a photo exhibition showcasing the Fund's outcome following the meeting.
