2026 UN Chinese Language Day Creative Short Video Contest Global Call for Entries

Dear Friends,

Chinese is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. In 2010, the United Nations designated April 20, the traditional Chinese solar term Guyu (Grain Rain), as the UN Chinese Language Day, in commemoration of Cang Jie, the legendary figure credited with creating Chinese characters.

To celebrate the 17th UN Chinese Language Day this year, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, CCTV UN, and CGTN America (hereinafter referred to as the “Organizers”) are pleased to jointly launch a global creative short video contest.

Selected award-winning works will be screened at the 2026 UN Chinese Language Day event at the United Nations Headquarters, and will be featured on the official social media accounts of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN and on all-media platforms of China Media Group, as well as partnering media and institutions.


Important Notes

1. Submitted works must not contain any content (including text, language, music, narration, scenes, backgrounds, etc.) that violates the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, nor contain pornography, violence, drugs, gambling, religious discrimination, racial discrimination, ethnic discrimination, or any other socially discriminatory content.

2. In view of the fact that certain selected works will be displayed within the United States and disseminated through global internet platforms, submitted works must comply not only with the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, but also with the applicable laws and regulations of the place of display and dissemination (including but not limited to US copyright law, rights of privacy, rights of publicity, defamation laws, and relevant export control or sanctions regulations), as well as the community guidelines and content policies of the relevant platforms. If a work is unable to be displayed , is removed, or has its dissemination restricted due to non-compliance with the aforementioned laws, regulations, or policies, the Organizers shall bear no legal liability arising therefrom.

3. Participants shall confirm that he/she owns complete copyright in his/her work, that the work and the materials used therein will not infringe upon any lawful rights and interests of any third party, including intellectual property rights, portrait rights, reputation rights, and privacy rights, and that the work does not violate the relevant laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, and is not subject to investigation, penalty, or sanctions by administrative authorities and/or judicial authorities.

At the same time, participants shall confirm that he/she has obtained the music synchronization rights involved in the work (if applicable), performer rights authorizations, and portrait authorizations, and that such authorizations cover public display worldwide, online dissemination, and on-site screening during the event.

If there is any copyright dispute concerning the work, or if the work is subject to administrative investigation, penalty, or sanctions, the Organizers reserve the right to disqualify the participant and to recover any awards and prizes.

4. If a submitted work infringes upon the intellectual property rights and/or other lawful rights and interests of a third party, the participant shall be solely responsible for handling the relevant disputes and shall compensate the third party accordingly. If the Organizers suffer any losses as a result of the foregoing circumstances, the participant shall fully compensate the Organizers for such losses.

In the event of any third-party rights claim or platform complaint, the Organizers shall have the right, depending on the circumstances, to suspend use of, delete, or remove the relevant work, and may require the participant to provide proof of rights within a reasonable period of time.

5. All works submitted by participants shall be deemed as authorizing the Organizers to use such works free of charge in all UN Chinese Language Day themed publicity activities established with authorization, as well as in public welfare publicity, display, and international cultural exchange activities related to this event. Such use includes promotion, display, and broadcasting of the submitted works (including but not limited to videos, still images, Chinese/English subtitled copies, promotional clips, etc.) through television, the internet, mobile media, and other new media, as well as the production of promotional albums, books, special publications, and similar materials.

6. All works submitted by participants shall be deemed as granting China Media Group (hereinafter referred to as “CMG”) a worldwide, free-of-charge, perpetual, irrevocable, and non-exclusive right of use. CMG shall have the right to use, reproduce, disseminate, display, publish, translate, and reasonably adapt the work, in whole or in part, on its all-media platforms (including but not limited to television, radio, the internet, mobile communication networks, IPTV, internet television, mobile media television, various application software, and any other audio-visual transmission technologies or platforms), as well as on the platforms of its cooperating media and institutions.

The aforementioned authorization is limited to uses related to the UN Chinese Language Day event and related cultural communication and international exchange publicity purposes.

7. The Organizers have the right to keep the shortlisted videos and use them for screening and international cultural exchange purposes.

8. Once submitted, participants shall not withdraw the selected works without authorization for any reason. However, in the event of a third-party rights dispute, changes in laws or regulations, or compliance risks, the matter may, upon confirmation by the Organizers, be handled through consultation or the use of the work may be terminated.

9. After the announcement of award results, the Organizers will notify all winners. If no confirmation or claim is received within seven working days after notification, the award will be deemed forfeited. All award-winning works will receive certificates issued by the Organizers.

10. No entry fee is required.

11. The Organizers bear no legal responsibility if the event cannot be held due to force majeure, legal or regulatory requirements, or other reasons.

12. Any disputes arising from participation shall be resolved amicably through consultation between the Organizers and participants.

13. The Organizers reserve the right of final interpretation of this event.
