On May 1, 2026, China assumed the rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council. On the same day, Ambassador Fu Cong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, presided over internal consultations of the Security Council, during which the Council's program of work for the month was adopted. Ambassador Fu later briefed international media at the UN as well as UN member states, outlining China's priorities during its Presidency.
Ambassador Fu noted that the current international situation is becoming increasingly turbulent, with rising conflicts and confrontations. The multilateral system and the international rule of law are facing serious challenges. China has proposed to convene a high-level open debate of the Security Council on May 26 under the theme “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International System”. The aim is to encourage all countries to revisit the original mission of the Charter, safeguard the victorious outcomes of World War II, and revitalize the UN's central role in the international system.
Ambassador Fu said that the Security Council will hold briefings on multiple issues this month, including the Palestinian-Israeli situation, Syria, Lebanon, and the protection of civilians in armed conflict. The Council will closely follow developments of hotspot issues, and urge relevant parties to remain calm and exercise restraint, promote ceasefires as soon as possible, resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiation, and advance political settlement processes.
He emphasized that China will discharge its duties as the President in a responsible and constructive manner, adhering to principles of fairness, openness, and transparency. China will maintain extensive engagement and close communication with all parties to build the broadest possible consensus, strengthen unity and cooperation within the Security Council, focus on key issues, and respond to the expectations of the international community with concrete actions.
Ambassador Fu also answered questions from journalists on issues such as the situation in Iran, China-US relations, the Palestinian question, and the selection of the UN Secretary-General.
