The Spokesperson's Remarks on the "half Year Report on Hong Kong" Issued by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office

2004-02-24 00:00

Q: What's your comment on the "Half Year Report on Hong Kong" issued by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office on February 23?

A: Hong Kong belongs to China. The Hong Kong affairs are internal affairs of China. We firmly oppose to the interference in China's internal affairs in any forms by any countries. It's inappropriate for the British side to issue a so-called Hong Kong Report to make improper comments on Hong Kong affairs.

Hong Kong is a local administrative region directly under the Central People's Government. To correctly recognize and comprehensively understand the guideline of "one country, two systems" are essential guarantees to maintain long-term prosperity and stability in the Hong Kong. The political system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region must conform to the stipulations of the Basic Law. This serves long-term stability, prosperity and development of Hong Kong and the general and long-term interests of Hong Kong.

To maintain long-term stability and prosperity of Hong Kong serves the interests of all the Chinese people including the Hong Kong compatriots. It is also in the interest of the international community and especially of foreign investors. We hope that the British side can take concrete actions to honor the commitment by British leaders on many occasions to make Hong Kong into a bridge of China-British friendly relationship.
