Wang Yi: Reviving the Monroe Doctrine Is to Reverse the Course of History

2019-05-29 14:58

On May 29, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered questions from journalists after holding talks with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla of Cuba in Beijing, saying that to hype up China-Latin America cooperation is to control Latin America, and it is an outdated Cold War mindset. Reviving the so-called Monroe Doctrine is to reverse the course of history.

Wang Yi expressed that as equal members of the international community, China and Latin American countries have the right to determine their own foreign policies and choose cooperative partners independently. As developing countries, China and Latin American countries need to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation for common development and prosperity. The facts have proven that establishing the comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and Latin America and deepening cooperation in various fields keep up with the trend of times and conform to the strong aspiration of the people. Both sides have achieved concrete results and delivered benefits to the region and the international community.

Wang Yi pointed out that to hype up China-Latin America cooperation is to control Latin America, and it is an outdated Cold War mindset. Reviving the so-called Monroe Doctrine is to reverse the course of history. The Chinese side's policy of developing China-Latin America friendship is consistent, clear-cut, transparent and open. As an integral part of the South-South Cooperation, China-Latin America cooperation has been committed to mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. It has no geostrategic intention, does not target or reject third party, or affect the legitimate interests of the third party. With the joint efforts of China and Latin American countries, the China-Latin America cooperation will continue to develop in a sound and steady way.
