2019-05-29 14:58

On May 29, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla of Cuba in Beijing.

Wang Yi noted that both China and Cuba are socialist countries. With a solid political foundation, China-Cuba friendship has withstood the test of international vicissitudes. The Chinese side will continue to firmly support Cuba's socialist cause, and unswervingly deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields. Against the complicated and ever-changing international situation, China and Cuba should strengthen strategic communication, deepen strategic cooperation, safeguard socialist cause, and maintain legitimate and reasonable interests, so as to contribute to promoting regional peace and development.

Wang Yi expressed that President Xi Jinping held fruitful talks with President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez during his visit to China last year, and they drew up a blueprint for the development of China-Cuba relations. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Cuban side, well implement the consensus reached by the two Heads of State, intensify exchanges at all levels, and continue to render mutual support on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns. Both sides should take the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative as an opportunity to deepen cooperation in such fields as trade, new energy, agriculture, tourism, bio-pharmaceutical, network and telecommunication, strengthen cooperation and coordination in international affairs, and actively carry out experience exchanges in socialist construction, party governance and state administration.

Wang Yi pointed out that unilateralism and bullying go against the development trend of the times, and violate the basic norms governing international relations. Thus, they will not be sustainable or supported. China and Cuba should work with all the other countries to safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and resist unilateralism and protectionism. The Chinese side will as always support Cuba's just struggle against external interference and blockade.

Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said that the traditional friendship between Cuba and China is time-tested and unbreakable. Attaching great importance to China's international status and influence, Cuba appreciates China's constructive role in maintaining world peace and stability, promoting world multi-polarization and enhancing global governance. Cuba has always placed developing relations with China in a prior and special position of its overall diplomacy, and sincerely thanks the Chinese side for offering long-term support to Cuba's just cause and help to Cuba's development and construction. Firmly upholding the One-China principle, Cuba condemns any country's interference in China's internal affairs. Cuba congratulates China on its scientific and technological progress, and opposes any sanction and discrimination against China's science and technology enterprises. Cuba and China should jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and safeguard multilateralism and the rights and interests of developing countries.

Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla expressed that the Cuban side is ready to work with the Chinese side to well implement the important consensus reached by the two Heads of State, intensify high-level exchanges, actively carry out cooperation in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, improve practical cooperation in economy and trade, medical care, tourism and bio-pharmaceutical, and strengthen communication and cooperation in international affairs. Regarding China as a model for socialist construction, the Cuban side values and learns Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and stands ready to enhance exchanges with the Chinese side to jointly promote socialist cause for progress.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on China-Latin America cooperation, the Venezuelan issue, and other topics. They agreed that China-Latin America cooperation is equal, mutually beneficial, open and inclusive, and conforms to the interests of China and Latin American countries. The two countries advocated that the Venezuelan issue can only be solved in peaceful means through consultation and dialogue, and opposed any external interference.

After their talks, the two Foreign Ministers signed a political consultation plan for 2020-2022 between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs and met the press together.
